Countdown to Russia/Latvia!

Hello friends!

Beginning May 17, 2011, a group representing Grace Lutheran Church will travel to Russia and Latvia to visit several of our congregation's mission partners there. Similar trips have taken place in the past, most recently in 2005. The trip participants this time around will be Pastor Todd Walsh, Hazel Spiring, Pastor Andrea Myers (me!), and Ronald Myers (Andrea's husband). Pastor Todd and Hazel have both made the trip before.

I've set up this blog to provide an easy way for us to share the experience with our Grace family and other friends. We should have internet access throughout the trip, though it may me more challenging toward the end.

Our itinerary:
  • May 17 - Depart from MSP and travel via Warsaw, Poland to Moscow, Russia.
  • May 18-20 - Moscow, Russia: Visit with Dietrich Brauer, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in European Russia (ELCER) and stay with him at the Lutheran Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.
  • May 21-22 - Tomsk, Russia (in Siberia): Visit Pastor Andrey Filiptsov and his congregation and attend Sunday worship. Andrey is a graduate of the Novosaratovka Lutheran Seminary in St. Petersburg and visited Albert Lea during his time as a camp counselor in Minnesota.
  • May 23-27 - St. Petersburg, Russia: Visit Novosaratovka Lutheran Seminary and seminary president Anton Tikhomirov.
  • May 28-31 - Riga and Valka, Latvia: Spend time with host families connected with St. Catherine Church in Valka and attend worship there.
  • June 1 - travel home.
Earlier in the week I created a map showing the location of these cities. We will be traveling many miles!

We look forward to sharing stories and pictures with you as we travel and learn!

Peace be yours,
Pastor Andrea
